Bear Creek Pass Technical Challenge
Technical granite challenge in the Frank Church.
Bear Creek Pass cuts through the Frank Church Wilderness boundary via a punishing climb that separates the confident from the foolish. The trail starts deceptively easy from the Salmon River valley floor but quickly turns into a technical nightmare of loose granite shelves, off-camber ledges, and creek crossings that have claimed more than a few oil pans. The pass itself sits at 8,200 feet with views into the largest wilderness area in the lower 48, but getting there requires precise wheel placement and serious low-range work.
This is expert-level terrain demanding lockers, rock sliders, and an experienced spotter. Attempt only in dry conditions from July through early October – snow lingers well into summer and returns early. No permits but the Forest Service actively discourages inexperienced drivers. Carry recovery gear, extra food, and satellite communication. The reward is accessing some of the most remote country in Idaho and proving your rig can handle what the Rockies throw at it.
