Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge Pipeline Canal Circuit
Pipeline roads through America's largest swamp
The Pipeline Canal Circuit follows elevated service roads built atop buried natural gas lines that cross the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin, America’s largest river swamp and floodplain. These narrow elevated causeways thread between cypress stands and open water where alligators bask on every log, following routes established by oil companies in the 1960s to access remote drilling sites. The circuit connects Morgan City to Henderson via a network of pipeline roads that rise just 3-4 feet above water level, creating an otherworldly experience of driving through treetops.
This is expert territory demanding complete self-sufficiency and swamp-savvy driving skills. High water can make sections impassable, and there’s zero room for error on these narrow elevated roads with 8-foot drops into gator-filled water on both sides. Spring floods make winter and early fall the only viable seasons. No permits required but notify someone of your route — cell service is nonexistent and recovery would require helicopter evacuation. The reward is penetrating the continent’s most intact river swamp ecosystem.
