West Feliciana Parish Thompson Creek Fossil Bluff Circuit

Plantation roads through fossil-rich Mississippi bluffs

Easy

The old carriage roads that once connected West Feliciana’s grand plantations now serve as backways through some of Louisiana’s most dramatic terrain — 200-foot bluffs overlooking Thompson Creek where Miocene-era shark teeth wash out after every hard rain. This route follows levee roads and abandoned railroad grades from St. Francisville toward the Mississippi River, passing crumbling antebellum structures and Civil War earthworks. The technical challenge comes at Tunica Bend where spring flooding regularly washes out the approach to the fossil beds.

Easy to moderate depending on seasonal conditions, passable in stock high-clearance vehicles during dry months but demanding 4WD when Thompson Creek runs high. Winter and early spring offer the best fossil hunting as receding waters expose fresh sediment, though summer’s thick canopy provides welcome shade from Louisiana heat. No permits required on public access areas, but respect private property boundaries — this is still working plantation country. What you’re chasing is a piece of Louisiana that predates the petroleum age, where natural history and human history collide in muddy creek bottoms.
