Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area Ridge Road System
Louisiana's steepest terrain and Mississippi bluffs
The Tunica Hills ridge road system climbs Louisiana’s steepest terrain through 3,000 acres of mixed hardwood forest that feels more like Arkansas than the bayou state. These fire roads and hunting access routes follow knife-edge ridges 200 feet above the Mississippi River floodplain, connecting hidden valleys where rare mountain laurel blooms in spring ravines. The main spine road runs from the Tunica Falls trailhead north to the Clark Creek crossing, passing overlooks where you can see into Mississippi and catch glimpses of the great river through winter trees.
Difficult rating due to steep grades up to 25% and loose gravel surfaces that become treacherous when wet. High-clearance 4WD strongly recommended, especially for the technical descent to Clark Creek Natural Area. No permits required but hunting seasons restrict access October through January. Best tackled during dry periods from February through September. No camping allowed within the WMA but primitive sites available at nearby Tunica Falls area. Cell service spotty on ridges. This route offers Louisiana’s most dramatic terrain change — from sea-level swamps to genuine hill country in minutes.
