Trans-Sahara Highway Central Route
The classic trans-African adventure
The Trans-Sahara Highway cuts straight through the heart of Africa from Algiers to Lagos, crossing the world’s largest hot desert before dropping into the green hell of West African humidity. This is the granddaddy of African overland routes, pioneered by French colonial administrators and now traveled by everything from overlanders to truckers hauling goods between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. The Hoggar Mountains in southern Algeria provide the route’s most dramatic section, where black volcanic peaks rise like cathedrals from endless sand seas.
Stock 4WD vehicles can handle most sections, but deep sand around Tamanrasset and potential washouts in the Sahel require proper preparation. Fuel availability varies wildly — carry extra jerrycans and research current political situations, especially around Mali and northern Nigeria. December through February offers the most bearable temperatures. This route delivers the full African experience: from Mediterranean coastlines to desert vastness to tropical chaos, with every mile teaching you something new about this continent’s raw power.
