Oatman Road Historic Route 66

This original Route 66 alignment climbs the Black Mountains through Sitgreaves Pass, following the same treacherous route that claimed countless Model T’s and challenged early cross-country travelers from 1926 to 1952. The road winds through old mining claims and past the abandoned Goldroad Mine before descending into Oatman, where wild burros—descendants of prospectors’ pack animals—still wander Main Street begging for carrots from tourists.

Moderate difficulty with steep grades, tight switchbacks, and no guardrails along cliff sections. Any vehicle can make it, but trailers and large RVs should avoid this route. Year-round access, though summer temperatures exceed 110°F in the valley. No permits needed, but bring water and check your brakes. The reward is authentic Old West atmosphere, mining history, and the satisfaction of conquering one of Route 66’s most challenging original sections.
