Annapurna Base Camp Track
Technical climb to Annapurna's deadly amphitheater
This brutal jeep track branches from the main Pokhara-Jomsom road near Nayapul, climbing relentlessly through terraced hillsides and rhododendron forests toward Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters. The narrow, rocky trail follows ancient porter routes, crossing suspension bridges over the Modi Khola river system. Prayer flags mark dangerous sections where the track clings to cliff faces, while monsoon damage creates seasonal obstacles. The final push to ABC requires technical rock crawling over loose scree.
This is expert-level mountain driving demanding lockers, winch, and serious mechanical skills. Monsoon season (June-September) makes sections impassable. October through March offers the best conditions, but expect snow above 3,500 meters. No permits required for the jeep track itself, but carry emergency supplies and satellite communication. The payoff is standing in the amphitheater of Annapurna’s south face, surrounded by the world’s most dangerous 8,000-meter peaks.
