Elk River Wildlife Management Area Ridge Road
Ridge-running route with mountain valley views.
Ridge Road cuts across the spine of Elk River Wildlife Management Area, offering some of the best mountain vistas in central West Virginia while serving as a working access road for wildlife managers. The route climbs steadily from the Elk River valley through mixed hardwood forests, with several rocky sections that test traction and clearance as you gain elevation. The highlight viewpoint overlooks the Elk River valley toward Charleston, especially spectacular during fall foliage when the entire valley blazes with color.
This moderate route suits stock high-clearance vehicles with decent ground clearance — the rocky climbs and muddy sections after rain require careful wheel placement but nothing too technical. Best driven from late spring through early winter, avoiding deer hunting season unless you’re part of the program. No special permits needed beyond state land access. The payoff is genuine solitude in managed wildlife habitat with several primitive camping spots along the ridge, though water sources are scarce so pack everything you need.
