Rincón de la Vieja Volcanic Crater Loop
Active volcanic crater and hot springs circuit
This 28-kilometer loop penetrates Rincón de la Vieja National Park’s volcanic heart via old cattle ranch roads and geothermal exploration tracks. The route circles the active crater complex, passing boiling mud pots at Pailas sector and natural hot springs at Oropéndola before climbing to Von Seebach crater viewpoint at 1,916 meters. River crossings at Río Blanco and Quebrada Azufrada require careful timing during dry season when sulfur springs run low.
Moderate technical difficulty with rocky volcanic terrain and several creek fords. Stock 4WD handles most sections but approach Von Seebach crater demands high clearance for loose lava rock. Dry season (December-May) essential as wet weather closes park roads entirely. Carry extra fuel for the elevation climbs and plenty of water despite natural hot springs. Park entry fee required. Reward: active volcanic geology few Costa Ricans experience firsthand.
