Cordillera de Guanacaste Rincón de la Vieja Northern Slopes Mining Road
Volcanic sulfur mine road to remote crater access
Built in the 1970s to access sulfur extraction operations on Rincón de la Vieja’s northern flanks, this gnarly 18-kilometer climb starts at Hacienda Guachipelín and punches straight up volcanic slopes through dense cloud forest. The route follows old mining roads past abandoned sulfur processing facilities and crosses three major quebradas where flash floods have carved deep arroyos. The infamous Quebrada Azufrosa crossing at kilometer 12 requires careful line selection — one wrong move and you’re stuck in sulfur-stained volcanic sand.
Difficult rating earned through steep grades, loose volcanic rock, and weather windows that close fast when afternoon clouds roll in. High-clearance 4WD with diff locks recommended, plus recovery gear and extra fuel. Best tackled during dry season mornings (January-March) before clouds obscure the technical sections. No permits required but notify park rangers of your route. The reward is accessing remote northern crater viewpoints and natural hot springs that see maybe a dozen visitors per year, plus killer views of Nicaragua’s Cosigüina volcano across the border.
