Ruta 40 Cuesta de Miranda Wine Valley Circuit
Red canyon switchbacks on Argentina's backbone highway
The Cuesta de Miranda cuts through blood-red sandstone formations along a section of Ruta 40 that’ll test your transmission and your nerve. This 47-kilometer stretch between Chilecito and Villa Unión climbs through seventeen hairpin turns, past abandoned mining camps and wine terraces carved into canyon walls. The road surface alternates between broken asphalt and loose gravel, with washouts common after summer storms that roll down from the Famatina Range.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles and functional brakes – the descent into Villa Unión drops 800 meters in 12 kilometers. Dry season (April-October) offers the most stable conditions, though flash flooding can occur year-round. Fuel up in Chilecito; Villa Unión has limited services. Dispersed camping available in side canyons, but water sources are scarce. This route delivers classic Argentine high-desert scenery without the altitude sickness of the northern passes.
