Peekamoose Road

Peekamoose Road cuts a 17-mile swath through some of the Catskills’ most remote territory, connecting Sundown Wild Forest to Denning. This old logging road threads between Peekamoose and Table mountains, crossing multiple creek beds and climbing through dense hardwood forests that explode with color come October. The route passes the trailhead to Peekamoose Mountain — a popular hiking destination — but the real draw is the backcountry solitude you’ll find along countless dispersed camping spots tucked into the forest.

The road demands high-clearance and 4WD in spots, especially after heavy rains when creek crossings can get dicey. Rocky sections and occasional washouts keep things interesting, but it’s manageable for most capable rigs. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though winter access requires chains and serious preparation. No permits needed, but respect the forest — pack it in, pack it out. This is old-school Catskills wilderness driving where cell service disappears and the only sounds are rushing water and wind through the trees.
