Hveravellir Highland Traverse F35
Highland crossing between glaciers with hot springs
The F35 Hveravellir route cuts straight through Iceland’s uninhabited highland interior between Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, passing the famous Hveravellir geothermal area where natural hot springs steam against a backdrop of black volcanic sand. This 165-kilometer highland track includes multiple river crossings at Hvítá and Seydisá rivers, plus the notorious Blöndulón reservoir crossing that’s claimed more than a few rental cars over the decades.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD and river crossing experience — water depths can change dramatically with weather and glacial melt. Best tackled June through September when highland roads officially open, though early season means deeper fords. No fuel available on route, so carry extra jerry cans. The payoff is pure Iceland — otherworldly landscapes, zero cell service, and those therapeutic hot springs at Hveravellir hut for soaking road-weary bones.
