Ambadalsvegur Mountain Road — Hvalba to Fámjin via Suðuroy Interior Spine

Suðuroy's spine road to the flag village.

Difficult

Suðuroy is the furthest island from Tórshavn and the one most overlanders never bother with — which is exactly why you should. The Ambadalsvegur track climbs out of Hvalba on the east coast, crosses the exposed interior plateau above 400 metres, and drops toward Fámjin on the west — the village that holds the original Faroese flag in its church. The track is narrow, grass-centred, and deeply rutted by winter runoff. The plateau section gives you unobstructed views across the North Atlantic in three directions, and when the cloud sits low it closes in fast. There are no barriers, no guardrails, and the wind load on a tall vehicle above the ridge is serious.

This is genuine high-clearance territory — a standard 4WD with at least 8 inches of clearance and decent all-terrain tyres will manage in dry summer conditions, but wet basalt and soft turf shoulders will punish anything undertyred. June through August is the window; the rest of the year this route runs waterlogged or snow-patched. No permits, no fuel on the track itself — fill in Tvøroyri before you leave. Cell service disappears on the plateau. Short in distance but slow in execution; plan an hour each way minimum. The payoff is Fámjin’s harbour and flag church, virtually to yourself.
