Harrison Lake West Side FSR
Technical lakeside route through old-growth rainforest
Harrison Lake’s western shore remains one of the Lower Mainland’s best-kept secrets, accessible only via this challenging forest service road that hugs steep mountainsides above the lake’s pristine waters. The route passes through cathedral stands of Douglas fir and western red cedar, some over 500 years old, while offering glimpses of the lake’s turquoise depths through the canopy. Several creek crossings and the challenging ascent over Mount Urquhart’s shoulder test both vehicle and driver, with the reward being access to remote hot springs and untouched camping spots along the lakeshore.
Difficult rating due to steep grades, loose rock sections, and multiple unbridged creek crossings that can run high during spring melt. Modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tread recommended, along with a winch for self-recovery. Open typically June through October when higher elevations are snow-free. No permits needed but respect First Nations territory and pack out all waste. Cell service is non-existent beyond Harrison Hot Springs. This route delivers genuine wilderness solitude just two hours from Vancouver’s urban sprawl.
