Starting at Yale—once called the roughest town north of San Francisco—the 45-kilometer route passes through Boston Bar, crossing the Alexandra Bridge and following segments of the historic road that brought thousands of prospectors to the Cariboo goldfields. Hell’s Gate, where the Fraser narrows to just 34 meters, marks the route’s dramatic centerpiece.
This is accessible to any vehicle with decent ground clearance, making it perfect for overlanders seeking history without technical challenges. The gravel sections are well-maintained, though spring runoff can create washouts requiring caution. Open year-round but most pleasant April through October. No permits required, with plenty of established campgrounds and fuel stops in Canyon communities.
