Chattooga River Gorge Technical Access

Granite descent to Wild and Scenic River country

Difficult

The Chattooga River Gorge Technical Access drops through some of the steepest terrain in South Carolina, following an old Forest Service maintenance road that plunges 1,200 feet in three miles from Highway 28 to the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. The route navigates granite shelves and boulder fields while skirting the edge of Section IV rapids, including the infamous “Jawbone” rapid where kayakers come to test their mettle. Rock gardens and off-camber granite slabs demand precise wheel placement, while the final descent to Bull Sluice requires careful line selection around massive boulders.

This difficult trail requires high-clearance 4WD with rock sliders and skid plates — low range essential for the granite descents. Spring runoff makes river access dangerous, while summer and fall offer the best combination of manageable water levels and stable rock conditions. No permits needed but respect private property boundaries near the river. Primitive camping possible at established sites near the takeout. It’s technical mountain driving with a big payoff — crystal clear swimming holes and some of the most pristine whitewater in the Southeast.
