Peninsula Mitre Cabo San Diego

Argentina's easternmost point via Tierra del Fuego's wildest track

Extreme

The Peninsula Mitre track dead-ends at Cabo San Diego, the easternmost point of mainland Argentina, but getting there requires crossing 40 miles of the most challenging terrain in Tierra del Fuego. This isn’t road — it’s a series of cattle tracks and oil exploration routes through peat bogs deep enough to swallow vehicles whole, tidal rivers that change hourly, and wind-scoured plains where 80mph gusts are normal. The skeletal remains of the cargo ship Desdémona have been rusting on the beach since 1985, and the automated lighthouse at Cabo San Diego operates in complete isolation.

Extreme difficulty demands locked differentials, aggressive mud tires, and expedition-level recovery gear. Tides dictate river crossing schedules — check charts religiously. Summer only (December-March), and even then expect sideways rain and freezing temperatures. Fuel, food, and spare parts for the entire expedition; nearest services are in Ushuaia, 8 hours away. The payoff is stepping foot on wild Argentina’s final frontier, where southern right whales breach in the Estrecho de Le Maire and penguin colonies stretch to the horizon.
