Peninsula Mitre Estancia Moat Circuit

South America's wildest peninsula crossing

Expert

Peninsula Mitre represents the end of South America in more ways than geographic, its windswept grasslands and abandoned estancias telling the story of Tierra del Fuego’s harsh reality. This remote circuit follows century-old sheep station tracks between Estancia Moat and the peninsula’s tip, passing rusted remnants of wool operations that couldn’t survive the isolation. The route crosses multiple unbridged streams where high tide can strand vehicles for hours, and navigates boggy meadows that turn to quicksand after rain. Scattered shipwrecks along the coast serve as landmarks—this is where the Atlantic and Pacific truly meet.

Expert-level expedition requiring modified 4WD with snorkel, winch, and emergency beacon. The circuit demands three to four days with wild camping and complete self-sufficiency. Weather windows are critical—attempt only November through March when temperatures stay above freezing and stream crossings remain possible. Pack for Antarctic conditions even in summer. Cell service is nonexistent and rescue can take days. The reward is witnessing the raw edge of the world where guanacos outnumber humans 100:1 and silence has weight.
