Quebrada de Cafayate Northern Extension Route

Hidden canyon route beyond the tourist trail

Moderate

Beyond the tourist crowds of Cafayate’s main wine valley lies this rugged northern extension through the Quebrada de las Flechas backcountry, where massive red sandstone formations tower over narrow canyon floors. The route threads past ancient Quilmes ruins and forgotten colonial mining camps, with the technical Cuesta del Obispo climb testing low-range skills as it switchbacks up 2,000 feet of loose scree and exposed bedrock between Animaná and the plateau edge.

Moderate to difficult rating due to narrow canyon passages, steep rocky climbs, and potential flash flood risk in wet weather. Modified 4WD with rock sliders recommended for the boulder fields near Pucará ruins. Best attempted during dry season from May through September. Bring plenty of water and expect no services for 80 kilometers. The payoff is exclusive access to some of northwestern Argentina’s most spectacular geology and undisturbed archaeological sites.
