Quebrada de Cafayate Wine Valley Circuit

Wine country through red rock cathedral canyons

Moderate

The sandstone walls of Quebrada de Cafayate rise like cathedral spires above this 85-kilometer circuit through Salta’s wine heartland, where the road cuts between formations like the Devil’s Throat and Amphitheater before dropping into valleys dotted with torrontés vineyards. You’ll navigate washouts from summer floods, ford seasonal streams that can turn treacherous after rains, and climb technical switchbacks to reach remote bodegas perched at 2,000 meters above sea level.

This moderate route demands high clearance and experience reading water crossings — flash floods are real here March through October. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but a few vineyard access roads require low-range and careful tire placement on loose shale. Best run April through November when rivers are manageable and harvest season brings the valleys alive. No permits needed, but fuel up in Cafayate — it’s 200 kilometers to the next station. You’ll earn some of the planet’s best high-altitude wines and red rock scenery that makes Utah look tame.
