Circuito Arqueológico Quilmes Ruinas
Ancient fortress ruins in sacred Diaguita country.
The Quilmes archaeological circuit winds through sacred Diaguita territory where stone fortress ruins crown desert ridges, connected by ancient trading paths now barely passable by modern vehicles. Starting from Amaicha del Valle, the route climbs through cardón cactus forests to reach the fortified settlement of Pucará de Quilmes, where 5,000 indigenous people made their final stand against Spanish colonizers in the 1660s.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles for rocky creek crossings and steep climbs to secondary ruins like Pucará de Rincón del Berrondo. The route runs year-round but summer heat exceeds 40°C, making autumn through spring optimal for exploration. No permits required, but respect for sacred sites is mandatory. Bring extra water and fuel as services are sparse between Tafí del Valle and Cafayate. The reward is standing among thousand-year-old stone walls where Argentina’s indigenous heart still beats.
