Elk Pass FSR to Elk Lakes Provincial Park — Upper Kananaskis Border

Most people approach Elk Lakes Provincial Park from the Alberta side via Peter Lougheed — the BC side via Elk Pass FSR is a different story entirely. You start near Sparwood off Highway 43 and grind north through a timber-harvested valley on a road that gets progressively rougher as you push toward the Elk River headwaters. The track crosses the Elk River twice on bridges that need pre-trip inspection — high snowmelt years can make these crossings sketchy. Near the park boundary, the road transitions to a rougher two-track climbing through old-growth Engelmann spruce before opening onto the sub-alpine meadows below the Elk Lakes themselves. The upper lakes sit in a glacially carved cirque with Nivelle Mountain as a backdrop — it’s the kind of spot that justifies every mile of bad road.

Rated Moderate to Difficult depending on season and recent maintenance. High clearance is essential; 4WD low is needed on the upper section. The park boundary requires you to pack out all waste. Best window is July through September — the pass holds snow well into June most years. Fuel in Sparwood or Fernie. Dispersed camping is permitted below the park boundary on Crown land; inside the park you’re looking at designated sites only. No permit required for the FSR approach.
