Buffalo River Sand Prairie Historical Circuit
Tennessee's hidden sand prairie wilderness
Tennessee’s Buffalo River country hides a geological surprise — vast sand prairies left by ancient river meanders, now home to rare plants and the state’s densest elk population. This circuit follows old military roads from the Battle of Hurricane Creek, winding through open grasslands that look more like Kansas than Tennessee. The highlight is Cranford Hollow, where a spring-fed creek cuts through towering sand bluffs topped with massive oaks.
Moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though wet weather turns the sand roads into axle-deep traps. Best driven May through October when prairie wildflowers peak and creek crossings stay manageable. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency manages most of the route — no permits needed but hunting seasons restrict access October through December. You get wide-open country rare in Tennessee, excellent wildlife photography opportunities, and a taste of the state’s unique sand prairie ecosystem.
