Detah Ice Road — Yellowknife Bay Winter Crossing

Eight klicks of ice between two worlds.

Moderate

Every winter, when Yellowknife Bay freezes hard enough, the ice road to Detah opens and the Yellowknives Dene First Nation reconnects to the capital across Great Slave Lake’s northern arm. The route is only about 8 km but it crosses open lake ice with wind-scoured pressure ridges and occasional overflow sections. The territorial government monitors ice thickness and posts conditions — when it’s open, it’s maintained gravel-on-ice; when conditions deteriorate fast, you’ll know it. The Detah end offers views back across the bay to Yellowknife’s Old Town rock and the CN Tower on the skyline — worth every cold second.

This is a maintained winter road when open, manageable in a stock 4WD or even a car during peak season mid-January through mid-March, but conditions can change in hours. Never drive it in spring thaw — people have gone through. Cell service is spotty to none on the ice. No permits required. Fuel up in Yellowknife. The Detah community road eventually connects to the Ingraham Trail system for those wanting to keep going east. What you get is a genuine taste of NWT winter road culture in under 20 minutes of driving.
