Tasker Gap Road to Camp Roosevelt Circuit
CCC history meets technical creek crossings
Tasker Gap Road winds through the forgotten corners of Shenandoah National Park, following the original access route to Camp Roosevelt—the first Civilian Conservation Corps camp established in 1933. The fire road drops from Skyline Drive through dense hardwood forests, crossing Hughes River multiple times before reaching the reconstructed barracks and museum at the historic camp. Stone culverts and hand-built retaining walls from the 1930s still guide the route down switchbacks carved by CCC workers with hand tools and dynamite.
This moderate route demands high-clearance vehicles for the rock-studded descent and three seasonal water crossings that can run knee-deep during spring melt. Best tackled May through October when Hughes River runs manageable. No permits required beyond park entry, but camping is prohibited along the route—plan this as a day trip from Front Royal or Luray. The payoff is touching genuine New Deal history in one of Virginia’s most isolated valleys, plus excellent trout fishing in Hughes River.
