Calcasieu River National Wildlife Refuge Backcountry Circuit
Coastal marsh wilderness on old oil roads
The Calcasieu River National Wildlife Refuge stretches across 17,000 acres of Louisiana coastal marsh, laced with abandoned oil field roads that now serve as backcountry routes through some of the state’s wildest terrain. You’ll follow raised shell roads and grass-covered two-tracks that wind between impoundments and tidal channels, with stops at observation blinds where wood ducks and pintails cluster by the thousands during winter months. The route connects several water control structures and ends at the remote East Cove boat launch.
This is easy to moderate driving in stock 4WD, but high water during spring can make sections impassable for days. Best tackled October through March when water levels drop and bugs retreat. No permits required, but check refuge office for seasonal closures during waterfowl season. Bring plenty of water, bug spray, and fuel — nearest services are 20 miles back in Hackberry. The payoff is solitude in genuine Louisiana wilderness where you might spot river otters, bald eagles, and the occasional black bear.
