Louisiana Outback Evangeline Parish Sand Hills Traverse

Deep sand and wild horses in Louisiana's secret desert

Expert

The Evangeline Parish Sand Hills offer Louisiana’s strangest terrain—a genuine desert landscape of deep sand, scrub oak, and open prairies where herds of wild horses have roamed since the Spanish colonial era. This 31-mile traverse follows oil field service roads and ranch tracks through the Mamou Prairie, crossing vast stretches of white sand that can swallow unprepared vehicles whole. The route passes several abandoned oil wellheads from the 1930s boom, now reclaimed by nature, and connects to historic Faubourg settlement sites where Acadian exiles first established cattle ranches in the 1760s.

This is expert-level sand driving that demands aired-down tires, momentum, and genuine desert driving skills—stock vehicles will be stuck within the first mile. Best attempted in dry conditions (August-November) when the sand firms up slightly, but even then expect challenging conditions that rival anything in the American Southwest. Recovery gear is mandatory, and solo travel is inadvisable. The reward is experiencing Louisiana’s most unique landscape, excellent wildlife photography opportunities, and the surreal experience of desert overlanding in America’s wettest state.
