Banggai Islands Coastal Circuit
Indonesian island hopping through coral atolls
The Banggai Islands scatter like emeralds across the Banda Sea, connected by a maze of coral-sand tracks and inter-island ferries that few overlanders ever attempt. This remote circuit threads through traditional Bajo fishing villages where houses on stilts stretch into turquoise lagoons, and the endemic Banggai cardinalfish flash silver in shallow reefs. The route follows narrow coastal tracks on Banggai Island before island-hopping via local ferries to Peleng and smaller atolls, where coconut palm tracks dead-end at perfect white-sand beaches.
This is moderate technical driving mixed with serious logistics—ferry schedules are suggestions, fuel comes from jerry cans, and spare parts don’t exist. A stock 4WD handles the sandy tracks fine, but waterproofing is critical for the humid coastal environment. The dry season from April to October offers the most reliable ferry service. Camping is possible on beaches with local permission, though homestays in villages offer better cultural immersion. What you get is one of Indonesia’s last untouched island paradises before mass tourism discovers it.
