Hoggar Mountains Sahara Circuit
Volcanic peaks rising from the deep Sahara
The Hoggar Mountains Sahara Circuit loops through Algeria’s dramatic volcanic highlands, where black basalt peaks rise 3,000 meters from endless sand seas like ancient monuments to geological violence. Starting from the desert crossroads town of Tamanrasset, the route follows ancient Tuareg caravan paths to Assekrem peak and the hermitage where Charles de Foucauld lived and died, then continues through the Tassili n’Ajjer region where 10,000-year-old rock paintings document when the Sahara was green. Technical sections include the approach to Mount Tahat (Algeria’s highest peak) and the descent through Atakor volcanic caldera, where loose volcanic scree and flash flood channels demand careful navigation.
This is an expert-level expedition requiring serious desert preparation, GPS navigation, and preferably travel in convoy. The route is only accessible October through March when daytime temperatures drop below deadly. Mandatory gear includes sand ladders, extra fuel for 800+ kilometers, emergency water for a week, and satellite communication. Permits are required and security conditions can change rapidly. The reward is witnessing landscapes that look like Mars and experiencing the profound silence of deep Sahara — a journey that changes how you understand remoteness.
