Parc National de l’Ahaggar — Atakor Volcanic Field Dispersed Camp
The Atakor massif is the volcanic core of the Hoggar Mountains — a surreal landscape of eroded lava necks, basalt plains, and wind-carved rock towers rising above 2,700 metres. Dispersed camping here means pulling off the piste in the open desert between Tamanrasset and the Assekrem hermitage, with nothing around you but black rock and stars so thick they feel low enough to touch. No facilities, no shade structures, no crowds. You share this place with the wind and whatever Tuareg nomads happen to be moving through. Fire is largely impractical — no wood — gas or diesel stove only.
Access is via the Piste de l’Assekrem out of Tamanrasset — a rough, rocky, navigationally demanding track requiring a competent 4WD and local knowledge or a reliable GPS track. A guide is legally required for foreigners entering the park. Carry all fuel, water for 3+ days minimum, and notify authorities in Tamanrasset before heading up. Best October through March; summer heat is genuinely life-threatening.
Volcanic Sahara silence at 2,700m.
