Assekrem Hermitage — Père de Foucauld Plateau Viewpoint
Perched on the summit plateau of Assekrem at roughly 2,750 meters, this small stone hermitage was built by Charles de Foucauld in the early 1900s and is still maintained by White Fathers monks. The 360-degree panorama over the Hoggar’s fractured volcanic plugs, basalt columns, and eroded lava fields is genuinely staggering — the kind of landscape that makes you sit down and shut up. Most overlanders time their arrival for sunset or pre-dawn to catch the light igniting the rock towers. This is the anchor point for the entire Piste de l’Assekrem run from Tamanrasset.
Access is via rough piste from Tamanrasset — the track climbs steeply in the final kilometers and requires a competent 4WD. A national park guide is mandatory for the Ahaggar circuit. Best window is October through March when heat is survivable. Carry all fuel, water, and food from Tam — there is nothing up here.
