Massanutten Mountain Ridge Fire Road
CCC-built ridge runner with unmatched valley views
The Massanutten Ridge Fire Road traces the spine of Virginia’s isolated Massanutten Mountain, offering 30 miles of gravel and dirt track between Luray and Front Royal. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this maintained fire road climbs to nearly 3,000 feet elevation with sweeping views of the main Blue Ridge to the east and Allegheny Mountains to the west. Key waypoints include Buzzard Rock overlook and the historic Elizabeth Furnace iron works ruins.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though recent rains can create muddy sections and loose gravel challenges. Spring through fall offers the best conditions and visibility, with spectacular autumn colors in October. No permits required and multiple access points allow for shorter segments. Carry extra water and snacks — the nearest services are in Luray or Front Royal. The payoff is unmatched valley views and a sense of riding Virginia’s geological backbone.
