Mae Hong Son Loop
Thailand's epic 1,864-curve mountain loop
The Mae Hong Son Loop winds through Thailand’s mountainous northwest corner, connecting Chiang Mai to the Myanmar border via 1,864 documented curves through tribal territories. This 600-kilometer circuit climbs through Pai’s backpacker haven before tackling the serious mountain sections toward Mae Hong Son town, where Shan temples reflect in morning mist over Chong Kham Lake. The route threads between Myanmar’s contested borderlands and Doi Inthanon’s cloud forests, passing through Karen and Hmong villages where traditional life continues despite the steady stream of adventure riders.
While technically manageable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance, the endless switchbacks and narrow mountain roads demand concentration and mechanical sympathy. Monsoon season (June-October) turns sections into muddy nightmares, making November through April the prime window. Fuel stops are frequent enough, but carry tools and spare tubes if you’re on two wheels. The reward is Thailand’s most diverse cultural immersion, from hill tribe markets to hot springs, plus riding some of Southeast Asia’s most engaging mountain roads without the chaos of mainstream tourist routes.
