Bagan Ancient Temple Circuit
2,000 ancient temples across Myanmar's sacred plains
Over 2,000 Buddhist temples and pagodas dot the dusty plains of Old Bagan, remnants of the 10,000 structures built between the 11th and 13th centuries. This circuit connects major temple complexes via sandy tracks through acacia forests, passing villages where ox-carts still haul goods to market. The route includes technical climbs up temple platforms for sunrise views over the Irrawaddy River, while hidden dirt roads reveal lesser-known stupas buried in jungle growth. Sulamani Temple and Dhammayangyi Temple anchor the northern loop.
The sandy terrain requires high-clearance vehicles and aggressive tread patterns during dry season. Monsoon rains (May-October) turn tracks into impassable mud. Archaeological zone permits are mandatory, with strict rules about driving near temple foundations. Stock SUVs handle most routes, but carry recovery gear for soft sand sections. The reward is exploring one of Asia’s greatest archaeological sites with the freedom to discover forgotten temples away from tour bus crowds.
