Friendship Highway (China-Nepal Border)

Roof of the world highway to Nepal border

Expert

The Friendship Highway cuts across the Tibetan Plateau from Lhasa to the Nepal border, reaching 5,230 meters at Lalung La Pass where prayer flags snap in thin air and yaks graze beside the road. This 800-kilometer route follows the ancient trade path through Gyantse and Shigatse, past Everest Base Camp turnoff, before dropping into the gorge at Zhangmu border crossing. The highway crosses multiple high passes including Kamba La with its stunning views of Yamdrok Lake, and navigates the technical descent through Nyalam where landslides frequently reshape the roadway.

Rated Expert due to extreme altitude, weather exposure, and remote sections with zero services for 200+ kilometers. Requires high-clearance 4WD, extra fuel, emergency oxygen, and Chinese permits plus Tibet Travel Permit. Best May-October when passes are clear, though sudden storms can close routes for days. Cell service exists only near major towns. The reward is crossing the roof of the world through landscapes that haven’t changed in centuries, ending at one of Asia’s most dramatic border crossings.
