Sani Pass Mountain Route

Africa's highest pub via switchback hell

Expert

The Sani Pass snakes up the Drakensberg escarpment through 20 kilometers of hairpin turns carved into sheer cliff faces, connecting KwaZulu-Natal to the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. This treacherous route climbs 1,330 meters in elevation, with sections so steep that vehicles crawl in first gear while negotiating loose rock surfaces and near-vertical drops with no guardrails. The notorious Sani Mountain Lodge sits at the top — literally the highest pub in Africa — where overlanders toast surviving one of the continent’s most demanding mountain passes.

This is proper 4WD-only terrain that has claimed vehicles and lives when attempted in poor weather or with inadequate equipment. High-clearance 4x4s with low-range transfer cases are mandatory, along with recovery gear and spare tires. The pass closes during winter snow and heavy rains, making April through October the optimal window. No permits required, but passport control at the top handles border formalities. Fuel up in Underberg before attempting — there’s nothing reliable until you’re back down. The reward is crossing into Lesotho’s spectacular highland wilderness and bragging rights for conquering Africa’s most infamous mountain pass.
