Sani Pass — Sani Top Chalet Campsite
Sani Top Chalet sits right on the Lesotho border at the top of the Sani Pass, and the campsite here is as raw as the setting. You’re at nearly 2900m, exposed to whatever the sky decides to throw, with panoramic Drakensberg escarpment views stretching back into KwaZulu-Natal. The chalet offers basic ablutions, a bar (the famous highest pub in Africa claim), and meals — so you’re not completely in the wild. Small capacity, grassy pitches, cold nights year-round. Arrive early to secure a spot during the peak summer months.
Access requires a 4WD — the Sani Pass road is steep, loose, and wet in summer. South African side requires passing through the Sani Pass border post. Confirm the border is open before you commit; it has specific hours and occasional closures. No driving it in a standard 2WD — you will not make it.
Highest campsite on the Sani Pass escarpment.
