South African Border Post — Sani Pass Lower Gate
This is your last stop in South Africa before the real climb begins. The SA border post sits at the base of the Sani Pass road, just off the gravel approach from Underberg. You’ll get your passport stamped out here and the customs officer may ask about goods you’re carrying — keep your paperwork clean and your vehicle documentation handy. The post is small, no-frills, and the staff have seen every configuration of overlanding rig imaginable. It’s also your last cell signal and last chance to top up water from a tap at the facility before things go full wilderness above.
Hours are roughly 08:00–16:00 daily but verify before you go — they close for holidays and can go off schedule. Lesotho immigration is at the summit. The road above this point is 4WD mandatory; no 2WD or rental vehicles without a 4WD drivetrain are permitted past the gate. Get there early to avoid vehicle queues on peak weekends.
Stamp out here. Real trail starts above.
