Sani Top Chalet Campground — Lesotho Highlands Sani Pass Summit
Sani Top Chalet runs a proper campground on the Lesotho side of the Sani Pass summit at roughly 2,874 metres. It’s cold, exposed, and absolutely raw up here — wind hammers the plateau year-round and frost is common even in summer. The camp has basic ablutions, hot showers on good days, and fire facilities. You’re camping next to the highest licensed pub in Africa, which means you can warm up with a Maluti beer without walking far. Small, tight site — don’t expect a crowd of rigs, but don’t expect privacy either in peak season (June–September overlanding window).
Access is via the Sani Pass from the KwaZulu-Natal side — 4WD mandatory, no exceptions. The Lesotho plateau approach from Mokhotlong District is rough dirt, passable in a capable 4WD. Snow can close the pass between June and August. Check conditions before committing. Fuel and resupply are very limited once you’re on the plateau — carry spares and extra fuel.
Highest pub in Africa. Coldest camp on the plateau.
