Puite Canyon Road — White Mountains to Volcanic Tablelands via Chalfant Valley

Eastern Sierra slot canyon meets volcanic moonscape.

Difficult

Drop off US-395 north of Bishop and the pavement ends fast. The Puite Canyon Road climbs northeast through sagebrush benches before threading into the basalt-rimmed canyon proper, where the walls close in and the track deteriorates into loose cobble and embedded rock shelves. The real work starts at the canyon narrows — a series of shelf road switchbacks above a dry creek bed that punish anything with long overhangs. Push through and the terrain opens onto the volcanic tablelands northeast of the White Mountain foothills, with ancient petroglyphs etched into basalt boulders and jackrabbits scattering in every direction. The route eventually drops you into the Chalfant Valley, a forgotten stretch of high desert between the Whites and the Volcanic Tablelands that most drivers on 395 never even know exists.

This is legitimate high-clearance territory — skid plates are not optional, and a locker helps on the canyon shelf sections when loose rock shifts underfoot. Stock lifted trucks with all-terrain tires can manage it, but keep recovery gear rigged. No water anywhere on route; load up in Bishop before you leave. Cell service dies within two miles of the pavement. Best run April through June or September through October — midsummer heat on these dark basalt flats is brutal. No permit required; BLM land throughout. Dispersed camping on the tablelands is outstanding, with big sky and almost zero company.
