Pearl River Wildlife Management Area Honey Island Swamp Circuit

The Pearl River WMA’s Honey Island Swamp circuit takes you deep into one of the most pristine river swamps in the southeastern United States, where 1000-year-old cypress trees create a cathedral canopy above muddy two-tracks. This 18-mile loop follows old logging roads and oil field access routes through the swamp, crossing numerous sloughs and bayous via aging wooden bridges and concrete pipe crossings. The route connects several hunting camps and passes the famous Honey Island Swamp Monster sighting locations, with multiple water crossings that can reach bumper depth during spring floods.

This is moderate-difficulty wheeling that demands high ground clearance and mud tires—stock vehicles will get buried in the gumbo clay that Louisiana calls dirt. Best tackled during dry months (August-October), though even then expect knee-deep mud holes and standing water. Bring a winch, recovery gear, and plenty of fresh water since the brackish swamp water isn’t potable. The payoff is accessing some of Louisiana’s most remote wilderness, excellent fishing spots, and the genuine possibility of spotting the swamp’s famous cryptid residents.
