The Carretera Costera Sonora cuts through some of Mexico’s most desolate coastal desert, where saguaro cacti stand sentinel over endless stretches of the Sea of Cortez. This remote route runs roughly 400 kilometers from Guaymas north to Puerto Peñasco, following ancient fishing paths and mining roads that snake between volcanic peaks and pristine beaches. The road passes through Bahía Kino and Desemboque, where Seri indigenous communities have fished these waters for centuries, and crosses dozens of arroyos that flood during summer monsoons.
This is solid moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for river crossings and deep sand sections, especially around Desemboque de los Seris. Carry extra fuel—gas stations are 100+ miles apart—and at least two days’ water. Best tackled October through March when temperatures drop below 90°F. The reward is absolute solitude, world-class fishing spots, and some of the most pristine desert coastline on the continent. Dispersed camping is unlimited along the beaches.
