Cap-aux-Meules to Grande-Entrée Coastal Loop
Island-hopping through Quebec's maritime jewels
The Cap-aux-Meules to Grande-Entrée loop connects the scattered gems of Quebec’s Magdalen Islands via Route 199, threading through fishing villages, salt marshes, and the famous red sandstone cliffs that define this Atlantic archipelago. You’ll cross narrow causeways linking Île du Cap aux Meules to Île aux Loups, then continue to Grande-Entrée Island past endless beaches where grey seals haul out in massive colonies. The route showcases Acadian culture, lighthouse beacons, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in eastern Canada.
While paved throughout, this route offers plenty of gravel side roads leading to secluded beaches and clifftop viewpoints perfect for exploration. Any vehicle can handle the main circuit, but high clearance helps on beach access tracks. Summer brings crowds but also whale watching and perfect weather. Spring and fall offer solitude and storm watching, though ferry schedules become limited. The real treasure here isn’t technical challenge but cultural immersion and access to one of Canada’s most unique maritime landscapes.
