Lonesome Highway — Centennial Road to Tensleep Canyon via the Wind River Basin Rim

Gros Ventre canyon — geology, history, and solitude.

Moderate

In 1925, a chunk of Sheep Mountain broke off and buried the Gros Ventre River, creating Slide Lake overnight. Two years later the natural dam failed and the town of Kelly nearly washed away. You drive through all of that history on the Gros Ventre Road, which leaves the pavement at Kelly, Wyoming, and follows the river east into the Bridger-Teton National Forest past the visible scar of the landslide on the south canyon wall. The road stays passable two-wheel-drive in dry conditions up to Lower Slide Lake, but beyond Atherton Creek Campground it tightens to rocky two-track as it climbs toward Jackpine Creek and the Red Hills. That upper stretch — red badlands breaking into green sagebrush benches above the river — is the payoff most day-trippers miss entirely.

Stock high-clearance 4WD handles the upper road comfortably in dry conditions; after rain the clay sections above Atherton Creek get genuinely slick. No permit required. Atherton Creek Campground offers developed sites with water seasonally; dispersed camping is available in the national forest above it. Cell service is gone once you clear Kelly. Best season is June through September — the road closes in winter. Fuel in Jackson, about 25 miles west. Elk, moose, and the occasional black bear make this one of the better wildlife corridors in the Greater Yellowstone region. Don’t rush it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this route without modifications?

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner is fine for most of this route. The upper section toward Tensleep Canyon gets rougher and warrants 4WD engagement — a lifted rig helps but isn't required if you pick your lines.

When does the road typically open in spring and is it passable through fall?

June through September is the reliable window. Snow and mud close the upper sections well into May most years, and early October storms can shut it down fast. Check with the Bridger-Teton Jackson Ranger District before going in shoulder seasons.

Do you need a permit to drive or camp on this route?

No permit required to drive the road. Dispersed camping on Bridger-Teton National Forest land is free and no reservation is needed — just follow the 200-foot setback from water sources and pack everything out.

What's the hardest section and what actually makes it difficult?

The upper basin rim section is where it earns its teeth — loose shale, exposed sidehills, and ruts that deepen after rain. It's not technical rock-crawling, but a moment of inattention on a wet shelf road with exposure will wake you up fast.

How far is the nearest gas from the trailhead and is there any cell service on route?

Fill up in Jackson before you go — Kelly has nothing, and you won't find a pump until you're well out of the basin on the other end. Cell service is zero for the entire 35 miles, so download offline maps and tell someone your plan.
