Paramo de Sumapaz Access Route

Into the world's largest páramo wilderness

Expert

The rough track into Sumapaz páramo climbs from coffee farms to Colombia’s highest wetlands, crossing terrain that was FARC territory until 2016. This 4WD route penetrates the world’s largest páramo complex, a 333,000-hectare ecosystem that looks more like Scottish highlands than tropical Colombia. The track crosses the continental divide at Páramo de Sumapaz proper, where frailejones (giant rosette plants) tower 15 feet above boggy ground that’s been accumulating carbon for 12,000 years.

Expert-level navigation and preparation required—GPS essential as fog rolls in without warning. Rock crawling over loose shale, deep mud holes, and stream crossings demand serious 4WD skills. Dry season (December-April) is safest, but weather changes in minutes at 12,000+ feet. No services, no cell coverage, and you’re truly alone up here. Worth it for access to Colombia’s most untouched high-altitude wilderness, where Andean bears, pumas, and over 200 bird species thrive in splendid isolation.
