Península Valdés Coastal Safari Circuit
Patagonian coastal safari to whale watching camps
Peninsula Valdés throws 240 kilometers of gravel tracks across windswept steppe where guanacos outnumber vehicles 100 to 1. This UNESCO World Heritage circuit connects Punta Norte’s elephant seal rookeries with Caleta Valdés’ penguin colonies via dirt roads that turn to slick clay after rain. The highlight route to Punta Delgada lighthouse requires crossing soft sand sections and navigating around beached whale bones that litter the coast.
Easy to moderate difficulty for stock vehicles with good tires – sand and mud are the main challenges, not rocks. High season (September-March) brings crowds but also whale migrations visible from camp. Carry extra fuel; Puerto Pirámides is the only reliable service point. Wild camping permitted along most coastal sections, but water is limited to visitor centers. Stock up in Puerto Madryn before heading out. The payoff: front-row seats to some of the planet’s best marine wildlife viewing.
