Ruta Nacional 3 Península Valdés to Puerto Pirámides Coastal Loop

Patagonia's wildlife highway to whales and seals

Easy

Peninsula Valdés juts into the South Atlantic like a massive thumb, connected to the mainland by the narrow Carlos Ameghino Isthmus and surrounded by some of the world’s richest marine ecosystems. The coastal loop from Puerto Pirámides clockwise to Punta Delgada and back covers 180 kilometers of gravel roads through sheep estancias and salt flats, with guaranteed wildlife encounters including southern right whales (June to December), elephant seals, and massive colonies of Magellanic penguins at Punta Norte. The historic Punta Delgada lighthouse, built in 1905, marks the peninsula’s easternmost point where orcas hunt seal pups in spectacular beach attacks.

Easy difficulty suitable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance—the main challenge is washboard gravel that’ll rattle your teeth if you don’t find the sweet spot speed around 60 km/h. Spring through fall (September to May) offers the best wildlife viewing and weather. Puerto Pirámides provides fuel, food, and lodging. Estancia accommodations available at Punta Delgada. This is Argentina’s Galápagos—a UNESCO World Heritage site where the wildlife viewing rivals anywhere on earth, accessible to overlanders of all skill levels seeking unforgettable encounters with marine megafauna.
