Rogue-Umpqua Divide Road — Diamond Lake to Lemolo Lake via High Cascades Backcountry
Volcanic divide, old-growth firs, zero crowds.
Forest Road 37 and its connecting spurs form the backbone of one of Oregon’s most underrated high-country overland loops, linking Diamond Lake at 5,183 feet to Lemolo Lake Reservoir through the Umpqua National Forest along the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness boundary. The route passes Toketee Falls — a double-tier basalt canyon waterfall that looks like it belongs on a movie set — and threads past hot springs, obsidian flows, and stands of ancient Douglas fir that survived the Cascade volcanic history around them. The road surface transitions between maintained gravel and rougher two-track as you push north toward Lemolo, with the volcanic peaks of Mt. Thielsen and Mt. Bailey framing the sky on clear days.
Most of this route is manageable in a stock 4WD or even a capable high-clearance 2WD in summer, but the connecting spur roads toward the Divide Wilderness boundary get rougher and require real clearance. Snow closes the higher elevations by mid-October and lingers into June. Dispersed camping is available throughout the Umpqua National Forest corridor; a Northwest Forest Pass is required at trailheads. Fuel up in Roseburg or Crater Lake before heading into this stretch — services are sparse. This is Oregon high country at its quietest, and almost nobody from outside the state knows to look for it.
