Deschutes National Forest — Crane Prairie Campground
Crane Prairie sits right on the reservoir of the same name, deep in the Deschutes National Forest between Bend and Willamette Pass. It’s a developed USFS campground with paved interior roads, bear boxes, and flush toilets — civilized enough for family rigs, remote enough that you won’t feel like you’re in a KOA. The reservoir draws osprey and bald eagles in serious numbers, and the fishing is legitimately good. Expect it to fill on summer weekends, especially July and August.
Access is via Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (OR-46), paved all the way to the campground. It’s a natural overnight hub for overlanders running the Crane Prairie to Cultus Lake backcountry spur or staging for roads deeper into the forest. Reservations through Recreation.gov are strongly recommended June through Labor Day. Fire restrictions typically kick in late July — check with Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District before you light up.
